See our range of tennis court lighting products or contact us for more information.
How much light do I need to provide?
The quantity of light is expressed as an average lux level and is usually determined by the level of tennis to be played. General guidelines recommend lower levels for social play and training, medium levels for club competitions and high levels for national and international competitions.
The current Australian Standard for tennis court lighting (AS 2560.2.1-2021) recommend the following average horizontal illuminance values for each level of play:
International and National Level Competitions:
750 lux
State and Regional Level Competitions:
500 lux
Recreational and Training Use:
250 lux
See our Tennis Court Lighting Guide for more information.
How many lights and poles do I need?
There are a few variables that can dictate how many lights and poles are required. Primarily, the number of courts and the standard of play.
As a starting point, to achieve the lux levels recommended by the Australian Standard for recreational play and training (250 lux) on a single court, we would recommend 4 x 6m poles installed in a side-lighting configuration.
Check out our Tennis Court Lighting Guide to see some typical court lighting layouts. Contact us if you have a different configuration.
Where do the lights and poles need to be positioned?
The number of courts to be lit and the standard of play will dictate where the lights and poles should be positioned (and their quantity). As a starting point, to achieve the light levels recommended by the Australian Standard for recreational play and training (250 lux) on a single court, we would recommend 4 x 6m poles. These are typically installed on the side of the court, between the net and the base line, approximately 3m-5m away from the court.
It may be worth discussing pole locations with your builder, if undertaking tennis court construction from scratch.
Do I need to contact the council?
Many local councils have stringent requirements to reduce obtrusive and unwanted light pollution from sports lighting. You may also need permission to erect light poles on your property. A phone call to the council before you start construction may save you from a lot of headaches!
Is there a curfew for operating the lights?
It is typically between 10pm and 11pm, however this may depend on your location and circumstances. We recommend checking with your local council.
Will my lights require backlight shields?
Depending on the location of the court, and the proximity of neighbouring properties, we may recommend backlight shields. You can also check with your local council. Contact us for more information.
How tall will the poles be?
We offer a range of quality light poles in varying heights, shapes and colour finishes, ideal for residential, club and school tennis lighting respectively. We also have a wide selection of adaptors and arms to suit your needs.
We recommend poles from 6m to 12m in height for most tennis court applications, depending on the number of courts and the light levels required.
